Hello everyone,
I have just finished a degree in Biology and have been exploring what i want to get into next. I really think I would enjoy being a nurse, specifically surgical nursing. My problem is not nowing exactly what a surgical nurse does. I have a nursing acquantance who works on the surgical floor but she is fresh out of nursing school and does not know too much. If someone, anyone, could offer me informaiton about specifics it would be soooo helpful. Also has anyone ever heard of hospitals allowing any job shadowing?? I think it would be really helpful.

Good luck with whatever decision you decide. Are you interested in working in the actual surgery or on a medical surgical floor? I have been a nurse in surgery/operating room for 6 years. When I graduated from nursing school, I did a year in a perioperative program that trained me in on how to be a surgical nurse. The good thing about nursing is if you are interested in a certain area you can go immediatley into that area of interest and get trained in that specialty like surgery. Most hospitals these days usually have a intern program for different specialties. I don't know about job shadowing being available but I do know that some nursing schools give their students some time in different specialties to see what they like and dislike. I had clinicals during nursing school in labor and delivery, psychiatry, general medical surgery, pediatrics, etc. If you have more questions, please feel free to email me at emory1975@msn.com. |
